Steve Yakunovich, Jr, 88, of Elyria, died Sunday, July 7, 2019 at UH Elyria Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Steve was born in Patterson, NJ and spent his early years in Kipton, OH, graduating from Camden High School in 1949. He served briefly in the U.S. Air Force and subsequently in the U.S. Army, prior to his honorable discharge in 1962. He worked as a brake assembler at Bendix for many years until retirement and then as a courier at Huntington Bank (formerly EST).
Steve enjoyed gardening, woodworking, personal fitness and spending time with his family. He was passionate about his children's education and athletics, and coached baseball in LaGrange for many years.
Steve was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Harr of Kipton; brother Joe of Kipton; and parents Stephen, Sr., and Mary (nee Sidwa) Yakunovich, of Kipton. Steve is survived by son, Scott (Laura) Yakunovich of The Woodlands, Texas; daughter, Deb (Scott) Stanfield of Oberlin; grandchildren, Matthew Stanfield, Larissa, Vanessa and Natasha Yakunovich and Thayne Badgett; brother George (Jane) Yakunovich; brother Peter “Bill” (Ann) Yakunovich; brother John (Iva) Yakunovich; sister Irene Tokas; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, July 12 from 10:15 - 11:00 a.m. at Camden Cemetery. Burial service with Military Honors will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Brian Kenyon officiating.
