Roosevelt Harris, Sr., born September 6, 1936, in Coatopa, Alabama, to the union of Joe Harris and Pearlena Stokes, peacefully transitioned on the morning of November 30, 2025.
At the age of 18, Roosevelt moved to Oberlin, Ohio, where he built a life grounded in hard work, family, faith, and service. On November 21, 1959, he was united in marriage to Brenda May Brooks. Their blessed union of 64 years produced a beautiful family of seven children, three sons and four daughters.
A dedicated and loyal provider, Roosevelt worked at Harshaw Chemical for over 40 years. He was also a man of many passions—known for his love of bowling, golf, and karate, activities he enjoyed well into his later years.
Roosevelt was the proud father of nine children. He leaves to cherish his memory seven
surviving children: Anthony G. Shumpert Sr., Roosevelt Harris Jr., Lena J. (Brian) Wilson, Dale E. (Tracey) Harris Sr., Martha L. Harris, LaKrisha S. Harris and Qualin W. D. (Kasey) Harris. His legacy also lives on through his 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-
grandchildren. He is also survived by two loving sisters, Barbara J. (Joe) Kirby and Elviria Harris- Lard, and one brother, LeRoy Harris.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, daughter, Akisha T. Harris; son, Donald L. Shumpert; great-grandson, Denico Dinwittie; great-granddaughter, Amina L. Harris; his parents, seven brothers—Willie, Joseph, John, Willis, Eddie, Chauncey Harris, and John Tolbert—and two sisters, Pearlee and Julia Harris-Bush.
He will be remembered as a strong, loving, disciplined, and generous man whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him. His legacy of love, faith, and family will continue to shine brightly through the generations he leaves behind.
Services will be held at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Oberlin, OH. The wake will be Wednesday, December 3rd from 5-8 pm. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 4th starting at 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am. Burial will follow at Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin, OH.
