Norman Baker Obituary

Norman Anthony Baker peacefully departed this life on December 23, 2019.  Born on January 23, 1924, in Magnolia Springs, Alabama, he was the eighth of nine children born to Charlie and Georgiana Collins Baker.  The Baker family migrated from Alabama in the early 1930s and lived in Florence and Henrietta, Ohio, before settling in Oberlin, where Norman attended Oberlin High School.  A World War II army veteran, he worked at Republic Steel (later LTV Steel) in Elyria for 40 years.  While in Oberlin, he was also a member of American Legion Post 656.  Norman enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending time with his family.  In 2012, Norman and his wife, Charlotte, moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to be closer to their daughter. He was a kind and loving husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather.   He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Charlotte Owens Baker, as well as his parents, Charlie and Georgiana; sisters, Theresa, Reba, Dorothy, and Antoinette; and brothers, Tracy, Stahl, and Charles.  He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Joyce Baker Gates, son-in-law Larry, and grandson, Aaron; his sister, Irene Franklin; sister-in law, Dorothy Baker; brothers-in law, Fred (Marilyn) Owens and Gary Randall, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.   A Military Service will be conducted by Post 1079 from Elyria, Ohio, followed by a Graveside Service conducted by Rev. Fred L. Bell of Mt Zion Baptist Church, Oberlin, Ohio, at Westwood Cemetery on Friday, December 27, at 11:00 a.m.
