God received a special angel when Michael George Gaines passed away peacefully at Welcome Nursing Home in Oberlin, Ohio on March 11, 2022. Michael was 69 years old. Michael is survived by his sisters Patricia Bell and Melissa Valdez, his brother Eric (Vicky) Gaines, and a host of loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. and Lois M. Gaines, and his younger brother Robert A. (Tony) Gaines. Michael was born on January 3, 1953 in Oberlin, Ohio. Michael was a lifelong Oberlin resident and a local celebrity. As such, EVERYONE knew Michael. Michael dedicated his entire life to Oberlin College. He was a notable fixture in the Department of Athletics and Physical Education as far back as the mid-1960’s when he began working with “uncle” Ray Gordon at the old Williams Fieldhouse servicing the varsity sports teams. He was “officially” hired in 1972 and retired in 2014 after 42 years of service. Over the years, Mike interacted with thousands and thousands of students that passed through Oberlin College and spent a great deal of his time at the snack bar in Wilder Hall. Mike served as a member of the City of Oberlin Recreation Commission and helped film Oberlin City Council meetings for the Oberlin Cable Co-op. He enjoyed listening to and watching his favorite sports teams especially the Cleveland Indians. He took copious amounts of statistics and was rarely without a pencil and a legal pad. Though his life was at times complicated, it was also quite simple. Mike loved without bounds and cared deeply about everyone he encountered. He taught us all immeasurable lessons in compassion and that the simplest things in life can truly bring you the most joy. A memorial service for Michael is scheduled for. It will be immediately followed by a graveside burial ceremony at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin. Flowers and condolences can be sent to 280 N. Prospect St., Oberlin, OH 44074.
