Gene C. Townsel, 80, of Oberlin, Ohio, passed away in the early morning hours on Monday, April 22, 2024 under the care of Hospice. He was born April 4, 1944 in Lee, Mississippi. Gene was a graduate of Oberlin High School, class of 1964. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and received an Honorable Discharge in 1968 after serving for 4 years. Gene was employed by Columbia Gas, starting as a meter reader advancing to the position of supervisor until his retirement. Gene, along with his family were members of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Oberlin. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching sports on television, especially the Cleveland Cavaliers. His family remembers him for having a great sense of humor, an infectious smile, and an abundance of wisdom for his children and grandchildren. Gene’s heart weighed heavy from carrying the love he had for his family and he never failed to make it known! Gene is survived by his son, Gene Jr. (Wanda) and daughter Shawndale Wilson (Allen). Also by his two brothers Lee and Adrian Townsel, eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Mansuel and Bertha Townsel, his sister, Glenetta Hill, and brother Ruben Townsel. The family will hold a private memorial at a later date to be announced. Arrangements are entrusted to the Cowling Funeral Home, Oberlin.
