Charles A. Startup

Charles Alan Startup of Oberlin, Ohio died unexpectedly on October 10, 2015.  He was 70 years-old.  Born on November 21, 1944 in Middletown, New York, Charles graduated from St. Luke’s High School in 1962, where he was a member of the varsity football team.  He went on to earn a Masters in Teaching from Oberlin College in 1971 and a Master of Science from Case Western Reserve in 1977. 

Charles’ adventurous spirit and love of travel lead him to serve in the Peace Corps in the late 1960s working on agricultural projects in Andhra Pradesh in India.  Charles was a licensed independent social worker in the community for over 30 years.  His interests included coaching youth soccer, cycling, traveling, independent films and writing poetry.  He is survived by his mother Jane, son Joshua (Mai) Startup, sister Ann Startup, her two sons John Diliberto and Matthew Diliberto, and his brother Thomas (Rita) Startup.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 24, 2105, at 3 p.m. First Church in Oberlin, Ohio.
