Betty R. (Bates) Stoudt

Betty R. Stoudt (nee Bates), 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Elmcroft of Lorain on Thursday, January 1, 2015.  She was born in Lorain, Ohio on July 19, 1920, graduated from Lorain High School in 1938 and had jobs at J. C .Penney’s and The National Tube before meeting and marrying the love of her life, George Stoudt, in 1945.  In 1948, they moved from Lorain to Oberlin where they lived until they moved to Elmcroft two years ago.

Betty was a devoted mother and grandmother who was happiest when surrounded by her family.  She loved to play card games and board games and drink “gramma tea” with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren while she entertained them with stories of her youth and how she met her husband.

Betty is survived by her husband of 69 years, George Stoudt; daughters Leslie Curtis of Oberlin and Judith Connolly (B.J.) of Boiling Springs, SC; son Clifford (Laura) of Greenville, SC; nephew, Gregory Grude (Roberta) of Wakeman; nieces Connie Hankes (Michael) of Braintree, MA and Kathy Pease (Keith) of Dola, OH; grandchildren Shannon Miller (Douglas) of Lagrange; Meredith Kaminicki (Adam) of Hilliard, OH; Kimberly Moore (Ali) of Blacklick, OH; Scott Nichols (Angie) of Lorain; Courtney and Bradley Nichols of Oberlin and Taylor Connolly of Boiling Springs, SC; Cydnei Greenlee (Wade) of Springfield, Va; Zackary and Cole Stoudt of Greenville, SC.   She is also survived by 17 loving and devoted great-grandchildren: Derek, Kaitlyn, Samuel, Jacob, Anabella, Maggie, Mackenzie, Braxton, Nora, Arianna, Stefan, Eryn, Dominic, Aubrey, Davin, Ashton and Leevonta and one great-great-grandaughter Makenna.  Her extended family includes dozens of nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Capt. Burton Bates and Agnes (Basterfield) Bates; her brother Thomas and her sister Reita Anne Grude.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 6, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Cowling Funeral Home in Oberlin.  Private services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Western Reserve or The Alzheimer’s Association.
