Anne McCormick (nee Zajac), 97, died on November 20, 2023 in Oberlin, Ohio. She was born on June 4, 1926 in Manhattan, New York to the late John and Anastasia Zajac (nee Stokalo), both immigrants from Ukraine. Anne is survived by her three daughters Catherine McCormick (Mark Braford, Jr.), Irene McCormick (Robert Frail) and Nancy McCormick and her two grandchildren Lenore Braford (Paul Drake) and Zachary Braford (Kathryn Marshall Braford). She was predeceased by her siblings: an infant, Walter Zajac, Alexander Zajac and Sophie Poruchynsky.
Shortly after Anne’s birth, the family moved to the Bronx where she attended elementary school and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School at age 14, having skipped three and a half grades. She was the first person in her family to go to college, graduating from Hunter College in 1944, with a major in English. Two years later on the fourth of July, she married Louis McCormick whose mother had come from Ukraine and father from what is now Belarus. Anne taught grades one through three at P.S. 67 in the Bronx for several years before becoming a full-time homemaker. She and Louis raised their three daughters. Catherine became a neuroscientist; Irene, a pianist; and Nancy, an artist. Anne was always an avid reader and an enthusiastic gardener. Her backyard was almost completely filled with flowering plants. After Louis’ death in 1998, Anne continued to live with her loving daughter, Nancy, in their Bronx home until 2015 when they moved to Oberlin, Ohio near Catherine’s residence. Nancy continued to live with and care for Anne throughout her life.
