Lifelong Oberlinian, educator, and city councilwoman Sharon Fairchild Soucy passed away at home Sunday morning with her family surrounding her.
Sharon Ray Fairchild was born in Oberlin in 1942 to Stewart and Virginia Fairchild.Sharon was middle sister to older sister Nancy and younger sister Susan.
She graduated from Oberlin High School in 1960 and Ohio Wesleyan College, earning a degree in literature in 1964.
Sharon directed the Lorain County Joint Vocational School’s Adult Learning Program for over 25 years, directing and teaching GED, Adult Basic Literacy, ESL, and prison education programs, helping students from all backgrounds achieve the dream of a high school diploma and improve their lives through learning.
After retiring from teaching and administration, she joined the Oberlin city council, serving Oberlin and its residents for 10 years. She was a champion of our diverse community and worked tirelessly to help improve the future of our beautiful city.
Sharon used her remarkable wit, diplomacy, and intelligence in service to her family, community, and public service her entire life. Sharon loved nature, traveling, sports, and art of all kinds.
She is survived by her husband, Robert J Soucy; two children, Dr. Jennifer Shults of Oberlin and Jeffrey Fairchild Shults of San Francisco; and her grandson, Devon Fairchild Shults of Oberlin.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at New RussiaTownship Hall, 46300 Butternut Ridge Rd.
