Ellen Wissinger

Ellen Wissinger, 98, of Elyria, died Thursday, February 22, 2018 at New Life Hospice in Lorain. Ellen was born in Lorain and graduated from Lorain High School in 1938.

During the 1940's, Ellen sang professionally and was lead vocalist for two well-known local bands. She modeled professionally and later became a manager/buyer for Higbees.

Always athletic, Ellen was a trained gymnast in her teens. As an adult she played tennis, jogged, was an avid golfer and synchronized swimmer. Ellen and her husband traveled extensively. She also enjoyed restoring antique furniture. She mastered a variety of artisan crafts and taught classes in several of them. She was an optimistic, outgoing and generous person who made friends easily. Some of her friendships spanned 70 years.

Ellen is survived by her daughter, Linda Smith; son-in-law, Scott Smith; step-grandsons, Sean and Bryan Smith; sister-in-law, Shirley Ewry and nine nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Robert Wissinger; son, Douglas Mark Wissinger; parents, Stephen and Veronica Drahos; sister, Mitzi Noonan and brother, Edward Drahos.

Visitation will be 10 A.M. and the funeral service at 11 A.M., Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Cowling Funeral Home, 228 South Main Street, Oberlin. Also, there will be a private family burial in Brookdale Cemetery at a later date.
