My condolences to Eleanor's family -- she was a treasure. When we moved to Oberlin in 1972 -- Harold to the College Library, Kari to Eastwood School 1st grade, Lisa to First Church preschool -- Eleanor was one of the first local residents that we met, since the children's library was our initial visit into our new community. She remained a thoughtful, calming influence in our family lives, even at a distance. After we left Oberlin in 1977, the girls visited her and the kitties several times, and she even saw the "other ocean" when she came to California once (I think Ted and Delores Johnson were also visiting there at the same time). She could make everyone feel comfortable, with all children encouraged to love books and library visits. We didn't keep in touch lately, as much as we should have -- but knowing that EEO was still on N. Cedar St. was a comforting thought, a serene indication that the world somehow still made sense. I'm sure that she would want us to carry on, remembering her fondly, treating everyone with kindness, and looking after the "strays." She will remain in our hearts.

Mrs. Owen taught a college children's literature class as I was finishing up my degree in elementary education in the 1970's. It was wonderful! She would read a book to my class with such expression, tell us all about the author and relate any awards the book had won. I was just thinking of her around the time that she passed.

I must express the LIFE that she gave me .. and so many other children of the community thru her true love of books and reading.
My family was a part of the OC system and the Public Library... ( mom was the head acquisitions librarian for OC for many many years).

I can't begin to express the love of books that she helped to instill in me, and so many many of my friends. My heart goes out to each of you and the community at this time of loss. / Christy

My heartfelt sympathies go out to you and your family during this difficult time. I hope the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring you some comfort. Just knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

My love and prayers to Mrs. Owen's family. I am so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Owen is one of the most influential people in my life. I loved her through my childhood at the library (summer book clubs and storytelling) and later as an adult when she taught Children's Literature at LCCC. I'll always remember her strong lovely ways and something she once said in class; "There is always more good in the world than bad." Amazing woman who seemed to live inside a special world; who knew how to take others with her in a leap of faith❤ May she rest in peace. She is always remembered.

Mrs. Owen taught many of us Oberlin children to love reading, it was always a pleasure to listen to her read to the class in elementary school or visiting the library where she also read to children. Always will remember the summer reading program.
